U.S. Eyes Travel Restrictions for Nigeria and 35 Other Countries
The U.S. is considering adding Nigeria and 35 other nations to its travel ban. A memo signed by Secretary of State Marco Rubio lists nations that might face new visa rules if they don’t meet updated entry requirements.
Among the African countries under review are Nigeria, Ghana, Senegal, Cameroon, Ethiopia, and several others spanning West, Central, East, and Southern Africa.
The proposal also includes Caribbean and Asian nations such as Antigua and Barbuda, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Bhutan, Syria, and Cambodia.
To avoid penalties, each country must submit a plan by Wednesday detailing how they will adjust their visa-issuance processes. They then have 60 days to implement changes before restrictions take effect.
This initiative follows President Trump’s previous immigration crackdowns. Earlier in the year, officials explored limiting travel from 43 nations, though Nigeria was not initially listed.
Then, in June, Trump issued a ban on travel from 12 countries, including Afghanistan, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, and Yemen.
Since his second term began in January, Trump has intensified immigration policies worldwide, increasing travel bans and mass deportations.
