U.S. Mission Issues Fresh Security Alert for Citizens in Nigeria
The United States Mission in Nigeria has issued a new security advisory, urging its citizens to avoid unnecessary travel to military and government facilities, particularly in Abuja.
The alert comes amid ongoing concerns about security around sensitive sites in the nation’s capital. U.S. officials caution American citizens and diplomatic staff to limit travel to such locations to approved official duties only and to remain vigilant in public areas.
Recommended safety measures include avoiding large gatherings, varying travel routes and times, familiarising oneself with emergency exits, and regularly reviewing personal security plans. These steps aim to reduce risks, particularly in areas frequented by expatriates, Westerners, and government officials.
This is the second warning in recent months. In May, the U.S. Embassy advised citizens to steer clear of the Mogadishu Barracks area along the Mararaba-Nyanya bypass after an explosion by a suspected suicide bomber.
A June advisory reinforced the need for caution around military and government sites due to escalating security concerns. The latest alert, dated September 2, 2025, links these restrictions to broader global security developments.
Nigeria Responds
The Nigerian government has reassured the public that Abuja remains safe. Information Minister Mohammed Idris said the government respects the right of foreign missions to issue advisories but emphasised that there is no cause for alarm.
“The Federal Government of Nigeria has taken note of the latest U.S. security advisory restricting Embassy staff and their families from non-official travel to military sites or government facilities in Abuja,” Idris said. “However, it is important to state categorically that Abuja remains safe for citizens, residents, and visitors alike.”
He added that Nigeria’s security agencies continue to work tirelessly to protect residents and maintain safety across the Federal Capital Territory and the country.
