Victor Boniface Faces Setback as Erik ten Hag Demotes Him at Leverkusen
Super Eagles striker Victor Boniface is facing one of the most challenging periods of his career after reportedly slipping to third-choice striker at Bayer Leverkusen under new coach Erik ten Hag.
The Nigerian forward, who was once the star man in Leverkusen’s attack, has now found himself behind Patrik Schick and new summer signing Christian Michel Kofane in the pecking order.
From key man to fringe player
When Boniface arrived from Royale Union SG in 2023, he quickly announced himself as one of the Bundesliga’s most dangerous attackers. His goals and assists played a big role in Leverkusen’s title-winning charge under Xabi Alonso.
In just 61 appearances, the 24-year-old scored 32 goals and provided 13 assists, earning four Rookie of the Month awards along the way.
However, his progress was disrupted by injuries last season. Although Boniface had cemented his place ahead of Schick at the time, fitness issues opened the door for others and eventually cost him his starting spot.
Ten Hag’s tough call
The arrival of Erik ten Hag this summer has only made things more complicated. The Dutch manager, who took over from Alonso, has been keen on reshaping the squad to suit his style.
In pre-season and early competitive matches, Boniface has barely featured, with Ten Hag preferring Schick as his main striker and handing opportunities to new signing Kofane.
In a recent DFB Pokal clash, Ten Hag’s decision to bring on Kofane ahead of Boniface raised eyebrows.
The Cameroonian youngster grabbed a goal and an assist, further strengthening his case as the second-choice forward. Reports in Germany suggest Ten Hag was impressed by the performance and now considers Boniface only as a backup option.
What next for Boniface?
While Ten Hag insists Boniface’s reduced minutes are down to fitness concerns, questions remain about the striker’s long-term future in Germany.
For a player who has already shown his ability at the highest level, sitting on the bench will not be an attractive prospect.
Several clubs are already monitoring the situation. AC Milan have reignited their interest with a fresh €40 million bid, while Premier League side West Ham and Saudi outfit Al Nassr are also reportedly keeping tabs.
For now, Boniface faces a big decision, fight for his place at Leverkusen under Ten Hag, or take his talents elsewhere where regular football is guaranteed.
