What Happens Now That President Tinubu Has Declared a State of Emergency in Rivers State

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has declared a state of emergency in Rivers State because of increasing political tension and safety issues.

This important decision was announced on March 18, 2025, by the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA). Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy Ngozi Odu, and all members of the Rivers State House of Assembly have been suspended for now.

Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas (Retired), a former naval officer, has been chosen to take care of the state’s affairs during this time. Here are five main things to expect as this new rule begins:

Vice Admiral Ibas in Charge

With the governor and his deputy not in office, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas will be in charge temporarily. He has a lot of experience with security and running things, which is expected to help bring back stability and keep government services going.

No Legislative Work

The Rivers State House of Assembly won’t be working during the emergency, meaning no new laws or checks on government activities. This pause lets the federal government make quick decisions to help restore peace, although the absence of a legislature will be noticeable.

More Security

Security will be increased across the state to ensure peace and safety. This will involve more police and military presence, more patrols, and stronger security measures in key places. These steps are meant to keep everyone safe without disrupting everyday life too much.

Business as Usual for the Economy

Despite the political changes, businesses and economic activities will continue as normal in Rivers State. This area is important for oil production and trade, and the federal government has promised that it will keep the economy stable and government functions smoothly.

The state of emergency will be managed by following the rules set in the constitution. The courts will still work as usual, and the National Assembly will watch over the situation to make sure everything is done legally. The government will keep everyone updated on what’s happening and how they are handling things.
