What’s Behind the US Embassy’s New Visa Rules for Nigerians?

The United States Embassy in Nigeria has introduced some changes to its immigration visa application process, requiring applicants to visit the Consulate General in Lagos at least twice before obtaining their immigrant visas.

The revised system will take effect from January 1, 2025, and aims to streamline the process while reducing delays.

The new directive was announced on the embassy’s official X (formerly Twitter) page on Tuesday. According to the statement, “For applicants with interviews scheduled after January 1, 2025, you are required to visit the Consulate General in Lagos at least twice during the immigrant visa process.

This new process is designed to help you prepare for your visa interview and to prevent significant delays in processing your immigrant visa.

The change is a two-step visa process

The embassy’s updated process consists of two mandatory visits:

1. In-Person Document Review:

During the first visit, applicants will meet with consular staff for an in-person document review. This step ensures that all required documents are complete and accurate. Applicants will have the opportunity to retrieve any missing documents ahead of their formal visa interviews.

“This review ensures that applicants are prepared for their visa interviews,” the embassy noted on its website. “The review allows applicants to retrieve any missing documents ahead of their visa interviews, helping to avoid delays in application processing.”

2. Consular Officer Interview:

The second visit will involve a formal visa interview with a Consular Officer. The date for this interview will be scheduled by the National Visa Center (NVC).

The embassy added, “If you do not complete the In-Person Document Review before your visa interview, you will be required to reschedule your appointment.”

New visa services provider in 2024

This announcement follows a prior update in July 2024, when the embassy revealed that its operations in Abuja and Lagos would be managed by a new visa services provider starting August 26, 2024.

The decision was shared on the embassy’s official website and verified social media platforms.

The latest measures are expected to improve efficiency and ensure applicants are fully prepared before their visa interviews, ultimately enhancing the overall experience for immigrant visa seekers.
