Where to Gain Admission in Nigeria Without JAMB

For many Nigerian students, writing the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) feels like the only path to university. It’s stressful, competitive, and often disappointing. 

But what if we told you there are schools in Nigeria where JAMB isn’t a must? Yes, there are legitimate ways to gain admission into a university in Nigeria without ever sitting for UTME. 

Whether you’re trying again after a failed attempt or just exploring different options, here’s what you need to know.

National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN)

If flexibility is what you’re after, NOUN is a great option. As a federal government-owned school that specializes in distance learning, NOUN doesn’t require UTME for admission. Instead, you’ll need your O’Level results and possibly some relevant professional qualifications depending on the course.

This makes NOUN ideal for working-class people, older students, or those who didn’t get the chance to take JAMB. The university offers a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate programs, all delivered through a study-at-your-pace model.

Madonna University

Madonna University is one of Nigeria’s oldest private universities, and it’s known for offering more flexible admission routes. While some of its courses may still require UTME, others don’t. 

Instead, the school may accept other qualifications like A-Levels, diploma certificates, or relevant work experience.

This makes it a potential alternative for those seeking a private university education without the JAMB bottleneck.

Alternative Admission Pathways Without JAMB

If neither NOUN nor Madonna suits your plans, there are still other ways to enter university without taking UTME:

• JUPEB and IJMB

The Joint Universities Preliminary Examinations Board (JUPEB) and Interim Joint Matriculation Board (IJMB) programs run for one year and serve as a bridge into 200-level in many Nigerian universities. 

You don’t need UTME to enroll. After completing the program and passing the final exams, you can apply for Direct Entry into various institutions.

• Direct Entry (DE)

If you already have a diploma (OND), NCE, or A-level qualification, you can apply directly to universities using Direct Entry. This route bypasses UTME entirely. 

It’s suitable for students who have completed other forms of post-secondary education and want to continue into university without starting from scratch.

• Distance Learning Centres

Several universities in Nigeria run distance learning programs separate from the traditional JAMB system. 

Schools like the University of Lagos (UNILAG) and Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) have dedicated distance learning institutes that may allow admission without requiring UTME, especially for certain professional or part-time courses.
