Who Should Be Blamed for the High Cost of Rent In Nigeria: Government or Landlords?

In Nigeria, the cost of renting a home is very high, and it is becoming unbearable for a lot of Nigerians. However, It is hard to say who is to blame: the government or the landlords.

Landlords own the properties and decide how much to charge for rent. They often charge high prices to make more money, especially in big cities like Lagos and Abuja where many people need housing. Landlords say they charge a lot because they need to cover their costs, like keeping the building in good shape and paying taxes.

The government also plays a big role in how much rent costs. It is the government’s job to control the housing market and make rules that could help reduce rent prices. However, there are some problems.

For example, there aren’t enough policies to help make housing affordable, and the government does not invest enough in homes that people can afford. Also, the government has not been able to stop prices from going up, which affects housing too.

Additionally, places with better amenities like roads, electricity, and security tend to have higher rents. It’s the government’s job to provide these things, and when they do it well, it makes those areas more expensive.

In summary, both landlords and the government are responsible for high rent prices. Landlords set the prices, and the government makes the rules. For rent to become cheaper, both need to take steps that help the people living in Nigeria.
