Who Will Win AFCON 2025? Supercomputer Gives Its Prediction

The 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) is set to kick off in Morocco on December 21, 2025, running until January 18, 2026. This 35th edition of Africa’s biggest football tournament will see 24 countries compete for the prestigious trophy.

Before the tournament begins, Opta’s supercomputer has predicted the chances of each team winning, highlighting the top favourites.

Top Favourites According to the Supercomputer

Morocco

As hosts, Morocco is the top favourite, with a 19.1% chance of winning. The Atlas Lions have been one of Africa’s strongest teams in recent years, reaching the semi-finals of the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Their squad features stars like Achraf Hakimi, the reigning African Footballer of the Year.

Egypt

Egypt, a record seven-time winner, has a 12.4% chance of lifting their eighth title. Led by coach Hossam Hassan, their team includes Premier League stars Mohamed Salah and Omar Marmoush. Egypt is eager to win its first AFCON since 2010.

Senegal

Senegal, winners in 2021, are given a 12.3% chance by the supercomputer. Despite a poor title defence in 2023, the Teranga Lions boast a talented squad with players like Sadio Mane, Kalidou Koulibaly, Pape Matar Sarr, Nicolas Jackson, Ilman Ndiaye, and Ismaila Sarr.

Algeria

Algeria is seen as a surprise contender, with a 12% chance to win. Although they struggled in recent tournaments, their strong form in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers under Vladimir Petkovic makes them a serious contender.

Nigeria

Nigeria, three-time champions and AFCON 2023 finalists, have a 7.6% chance of winning. Under coach Eric Chelle, the Super Eagles are aiming for their first AFCON title since 2013. The squad includes stars Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman.

Other notable teams in the top ten include Tunisia (6.8%), Côte d’Ivoire (6.7%), Mali (6.4%), Cameroon (4.1%), and South Africa (2.2%).

The Nigerian Football Federation has set a clear target for Eric Chelle: reach the final in Morocco, matching the Super Eagles’ 2023 performance.
