Why Did the FG Allocate N4.91 Trillion for Security in 2025?

The Federal Government of Nigeria has allocated a substantial N4.91 trillion to security and defence for the year 2025, focusing on retaking control of “ungoverned spaces” in the northern parts of the country. This budgetary commitment aims to address persistent security challenges and foster national stability and economic development.

Overview of the 2025 Security Budget

The 2025 budget allocation is specifically designed to enhance Nigeria’s security framework. It prioritizes the recapture of regions currently beyond governmental control, aiming to curb the activities of bandits and insurgents. By reclaiming these areas, the government plans to restore order and promote safe economic activities.

Enhancing National Security

The allocated funds will be used to strengthen Nigeria’s military and police capabilities. This includes upgrading equipment, enhancing surveillance, and investing in new technology to secure land, maritime borders, and airspace. Such measures are essential for defending the nation against both internal and external threats and ensuring the safety of its citizens.

Modernising the Police Force

Part of the budget is earmarked for the modernisation of the Nigerian Police Force. This will involve acquiring advanced equipment, boosting intelligence operations, and implementing community-driven policing strategies. These improvements aim to increase the effectiveness of the police in maintaining internal security and public order.

Economic and Community Impact

Securing critical areas will also allow displaced communities to return to their homes and livelihoods, particularly in farming and local industries. This restoration of security is expected to revitalise local markets, attract investment, and reduce poverty by making the regions safe for economic activities.

Commitment to Armed Forces and Police Welfare

The government is also dedicated to enhancing the morale and operational efficiency of the security forces by improving training facilities, updating military hardware, and ensuring better welfare for personnel. This comprehensive approach not only equips the forces to handle current security challenges but also prepares them for future threats.
