Why FG Ban Usage of Foreign Needles in Hospitals
The Federal Government has enforced a ban on the usage of foreign needles in hospitals across the nation to increase local production and safeguard Nigeria’s manufacturing sector. The directive was communicated through a circular addressed to all Chief Medical Directors (CMDs) and Medical Directors (MDs) of Federal Tertiary Hospitals.
The Minister of State for Health, Dr. Tunji Alausa, mentioned the importance of the decision during an official visit to the Afrimedical Manufacturing and Supplies Limited Syringe factory in Ogun State. He reiterated the necessity for a comprehensive approach involving all relevant government agencies to address the influx of substandard medical devices into the country.
Dr. Alausa highlighted the detrimental impact of imports on local manufacturers, citing the closure of several pharmaceutical companies over the past years due to unfair competition. He said that by curbing the importation of foreign needles, the government aims to create a conducive environment for indigenous pharmaceutical industries to thrive
Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, the Director General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), emphasized the need for stringent measures to prevent the inflow of substandard medical devices. She underscored NAFDAC’s commitment to promoting locally-made syringes and ensuring their quality and safety standards.
