Why I Burnt My Degree Certificate: Edo Graduate Unveils Reasons in Viral Clip

Alvin Ilenre, a Nigerian graduate from Ajayi Crowther University, Oyo, recently burnt his degree certificate, sparking a viral video that has left many questioning his motivations. In an exclusive interview, Ilenre explains the rationale behind his unconventional and controversial act.

Alvin Ilenre, a History, and International Studies graduate, disclosed that unemployment since February 2022 led him to hustle for a living. Frustrated with the challenges of securing a job and disillusioned by the state of the country, Ilenre took a drastic step and burnt his university, primary school leaving, and National Youth Service Corps degree certificates.

Alvin gave reasons for his actions

In an interview explaining the reasons behind his actions he said, “I burnt my certificates because I was going through some things and I needed to give myself closure,” Ilenre stated, emphasizing the societal decay that pushed him to take such extreme measures.

The certificates he spared were from his ministry, citing the positive impact of the ministry on his life. He expressed dissatisfaction with the value placed on educational certificates in a country where corruption and illegitimate practices overshadow merit.

Ilenre highlighted other prevalent issues that made him burn his degree certificate which include exorbitant fees demanded for job opportunities, the commodification of employment through illicit means, and the degradation of the educational system. He questioned the relevance of academic qualifications in a society where merit seems to take a back seat.

The graduate acknowledged the potential consequences of his actions but firmly stated, “I’ll never regret it because I didn’t burn the knowledge I have, but I only burnt the certificates.” Ilenre believes that emphasizing real education over paper qualifications is crucial and hopes his act will encourage a shift in perspective.

He believes the burnt degree certificate would stimulate government actions

Born into a family with a history of activism, Ilenre’s father, an activist and journalist, would have, according to him, supported his unconventional protest. While his mother expressed sadness when he burnt his degree certificate, Ilenre believes this action is long overdue.

In response to concerns about the government’s reaction, Ilenre expressed the belief that his act would raise awareness and prompt discussions about necessary changes in the education sector. He called for a revamp of the educational system, emphasizing the need for qualified individuals in leadership positions within the ministry.

As the viral clip continues to circulate, Alvin Ilenre remains unapologetic, hoping that his extreme action will serve as a wake-up call for the government and society at large to address the deep-rooted issues plaguing the educational and employment sectors in Nigeria.
