Why Is NLC President Joe Ajaero Meeting with Police IRT in Abuja?

Joe Ajaero, the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), is appearing before the Police Intelligence Response Team (IRT) in Abuja due to serious allegations against him.

The police invited him to discuss issues related to terrorism financing among other charges, including criminal conspiracy, subversion, and cybercrime.

His appearance at the IRT office follows an official invitation dated August 19, 2024, underscoring the gravity of the accusations.

Accompanied by his lawyer, Femi Falana, Ajaero’s case has also prompted a nationwide response from NLC members, who have organised a peaceful prayer procession in solidarity with their leader.

At an urgent meeting, NLC’s Deputy President, Sani Minjibir, announced that they are ready to protest or strike to protect their group’s independence if needed.

This comes after serious accusations against Ajaero, including funding terrorism.

The NLC’s leaders have told all local groups to be ready to start a strike all over the country by midnight if they have to. They also asked other groups and everyone in the country to support them now to fight against what they see as unfair treatment.
