Why is the Alaafin Oyo Selection Process so Controversial
The selection of a new Alaafin of Oyo, one of the most revered traditional rulers in Yoruba land, has always been a big deal. But this time, the process has been unusually dramatic, sparking debates and raising eyebrows across the country.
After the passing of Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III in April 2022, the stool of the Alaafin remained vacant for nearly three years. When Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State recently presented the staff of office to the 46th Alaafin, Oba Akeem Abimbola Owoade, many were still questioning why the process was so prolonged and controversial.
The Alaafin is a throne of influence and tradition
The Alaafin stool isn’t just any position. It holds deep cultural and historical significance, not only for Oyo town but for the entire Yoruba race.
This importance makes the selection process a sensitive matter, one that requires careful consideration of tradition, fairness, and transparency.
Why was it so delayed?
From the moment the stool became vacant, the process to fill it seemed chaotic. Over 198 candidates expressed interest in the position, a number that was later reduced to 65 and then to 10 through interviews and consultations with the Ifa Oracle, a key traditional process.
However, the disagreements started when the council of kingmakers, known as the Oyo Mesi, could not agree on a final candidate. Allegations of bribery and favoritism among the kingmakers added fuel to the fire. Some claimed that money had exchanged hands, leading to disputes over how it was shared.
Governor Makinde refused to approve the initial candidate presented by the kingmakers, insisting on a more thorough and transparent process. This decision was met with resistance from some of the kingmakers, who accused the government of meddling in traditional affairs.
The role of the Ifa Oracle
In a surprising turn, the state government sought the services of Professor Wande Abimbola, a respected Ifa Oracle diviner, to consult on the matter.
After a rigorous ten-day process, Ifa reportedly chose Prince Owoade as the new Alaafin. However, some members of the Oyo Mesi rejected the result, claiming the consultation process was flawed.
Legal battles and protests
As the selection process dragged on, it became entangled in legal disputes. Some members of the Oyo Mesi took the matter to court, challenging the state government’s involvement and the legitimacy of the selection process. Others called for the process to be restarted entirely.
Meanwhile, residents of Oyo expressed frustration over the delay. Many felt the prolonged vacancy was a dishonor to the town’s heritage and called on the government and kingmakers to resolve their differences.
Governor Makinde’s stance
Governor Makinde defended his actions, stating that he wanted to ensure the process was free from corruption and political influence. He emphasized that the Alaafin stool was not for sale and vowed to prosecute anyone found guilty of compromising the process.
Now that Oba Akeem Abimbola Owoade has been installed, the hope is that the controversies will settle, and the focus will shift to preserving the rich traditions of the Alaafin stool. The new monarch has promised to work for the progress of Oyo town and unify the Yoruba people.
