Presidency Explains Why Matawalle Was Retained Amid Terrorism Allegations
In the wake of a recent cabinet reshuffle by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the presidency has provided clarification on why Bello Matawalle, the Minister of State for Defence, was not dismissed despite allegations of involvement in banditry and insecurity in Zamfara State.
Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, explained that the National Security Adviser’s (NSA) office thoroughly investigated the claims against Matawalle and found them to be false. Onanuga emphasized that these allegations were fabricated and lacked credible evidence. He further noted that the presidency remains committed to retaining only ministers with integrity and proven performance.
Onanuga addressed the matter during an interview with Arise TV, explaining that numerous false stories have circulated about Matawalle. However, a detailed investigation led by the NSA cleared the minister of any wrongdoing, which is why he was not affected by the reshuffle. He highlighted that even President Tinubu had heard the allegations, but the NSA’s findings played a significant role in Matawalle’s continued position within the cabinet.
