Why Netflix Cancelled Season 2 of First African Original series “Queen Sono”

Netflix will not be streaming the second season of its first African Original series, ‘Queen Sono’, after it initially indicated the intriguing series, which had a successful season 1 run, would return.

The company said it discontinued its plan for season 2 because of production challenges caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The series, created and written by South-African comedian Kagiso Lediga, stars local actress Pearl Thusi, who played the role of a highly trained South African spy devoted to protecting the African people. While on the mission, she discovered shocking details about her mother’s death, which led her to embark on a fact-finding journey.

According to South African news platform, Channel24, a Netflix spokesman who was not named confirmed the development, describing it as a “difficult decision not to move forward with season 2 of Queen Sono”.

The Netflix rep. was further quoted as saying, “we are incredibly proud of the Diprente team for sharing their audacious vision and bringing it to life with Netflix. A huge thank you to our fans across the world for the love shared for our first African Original series.

“Netflix is also grateful to the amazing efforts shown by the cast and crew for their stellar efforts in creating this show for our members around the world. We’ll continue to work closely with South Africa’s creative industry to keep producing more compelling ‘Made-in-South Africa stories.”

Season 1 of ‘Queen Sono’ was shot in South Africa, Nigeria, Kenya, Zanzibar, and 37 other locations. It has received 91% critic rating on popular aggressive-review site, Rotten Tomatoes.

Reacting to the cancellation of season 2, the creator and director of the show, Lediga, expressed disappointment and extolled the work that went into the first season, referring to it as a “beautiful story that spanned the continent but unfortunately could not be executed in these current trying time”.
