Why Nigerians Are Reacting to Elon Musk’s APC Tweet

Tesla boss, Elon Musk recently posted on X that the Cybertruck is “an APC from the future.” While many people outside Nigeria understood what he meant, some Nigerians quickly saw the tweet differently.

In many parts of the world, APC can mean Armoured Personnel Carrier, a military vehicle known for strength and protection. Musk was using the term to describe the tough and futuristic look of the Cybertruck.

But in Nigeria, APC is better known as the All Progressives Congress, the ruling political party.

Because of that, many Nigerians rushed to the comment section, thinking Musk was talking about Nigerian politics. Some asked questions, while others reacted with jokes, frustration, and sarcasm.

For many citizens, the APC name carries strong emotions because of the country’s economic hardship, insecurity, rising cost of living, and political disappointment. So seeing the word in Musk’s tweet immediately caught attention.

Some users begged him to avoid using the abbreviation, saying it reminds Nigerians of difficult times. Others joked that the tweet nearly gave them a shock before they understood the real meaning.

There were also people who stepped in to explain that Musk was referring to a military vehicle, not Nigeria’s ruling party.
