Why Tinubu Is Suddenly ‘Chasing’ the South-East Ahead of 2027

The South-East has been one of President Tinubu’s major political priorities this year, ahead of the 2027 elections

What could be the reason for his growing interest in the South-East? The South-East was one of the zones where the APC and Tinubu clearly underperformed in the 2023 presidential election, so any fresh attention from Abuja is strategic, not random.

The ruling party struggled to secure strong presidential votes across the South-East states in 2023, and that weakness is now a political gap the presidency would logically want to narrow.

Election strategy and vote growth

A president seeking re-election will try to improve performance in areas where support was low in the last election. If a leader performs poorly in an entire region, that region becomes a weak point in the next race, especially if the election is close.

Presidential victory is not determined solely by the total number of votes; it also depends on winning support across many states. This is why incumbents work to expand their reach nationally. Tinubu does not need to win the South-East completely to benefit.

Even a small increase in support can reduce political risk in 2027 and help him appear more widely accepted nationally.

Weakening an opposition base

The South-East gave strong support to Peter Obi in 2023. When a region becomes a strong base for an opponent, the ruling party usually tries to reduce that advantage.

The goal is often to reduce the opponent’s large margin, not necessarily to win every voter. This may be done through political engagement, building new alliances, increasing government presence, and presenting policies and appointments that appeal to local interests.

If the South-East becomes less united behind one opposition candidate, that candidate’s national path becomes more difficult.

Economic importance of the South-East

The South-East is a major centre of trade, small manufacturing, and private enterprise. Its business networks and diaspora connections influence commerce across Nigeria. When the region is stable, trade improves and supply chains function more effectively. When it is unstable, prices rise, business activity slows, and investor confidence drops.

For any government focused on economic recovery, supporting major commercial regions is a practical priority. Economic stability in the South-East can also reduce public frustration and increase trust in government.

Development politics and visible projects

In Nigeria, development programmes are also political signals. When a president supports new institutions, commissions, or regional plans, it communicates recognition and inclusion.

The South-East Development Commission is important because it provides an official structure for funding and coordinating projects, including roads, erosion control, and social programmes. It also creates opportunities for partnerships and employment.

For a region that often raises concerns about fairness and representation, such steps can reduce feelings of neglect and strengthen public confidence, especially when people begin to see results.

Security and stability concerns

Insecurity affects daily life and economic activity. It reduces travel, disrupts markets, and discourages investment. When security problems last for a long time in a region, public anger grows, and the federal government is often blamed.

This is why the centre may increase engagement to improve stability, restore normal business activity, and reduce tension. Better security also supports trade, movement, and confidence, which can bring both economic and political benefits.
