Why Using CNG Engines are Cost Effective

As fuel prices continue to rise globally, many car owners are finding it harder to keep up with the cost of petrol. In Nigeria, the steep hike in fuel prices that began in June 2023 has pushed people to look for alternative fuel options, and one solution gaining traction is Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) engines.

In response to the rising cost of petrol, the Nigerian government has taken steps to make CNG more accessible. In November 2023, it was announced that the government plans to introduce one million CNG-powered vehicles by 2027. 

This includes the deployment of 11,500 CNG buses to improve public transportation and help reduce the financial burden on Nigerians.

The government has also promised to lower the price of CNG to N230 per kilogram, which makes it significantly more affordable compared to petrol. For commuters, this means they could save up to two-thirds of their transportation costs, which is a huge relief given the impact of the fuel subsidy removal.

Conversion to CNG – A one-time cost

While converting a car to run on CNG can be expensive upfront, it’s a cost-effective choice in the long run. For instance, converting a 2007 Toyota Corolla to CNG could cost around N1.8 million in Nigeria. 

Though this might seem steep, many Nigerians believe that these prices will drop as CNG becomes more common and the technology becomes more widely available.

Despite the high conversion cost, CNG offers significant savings over time. The price of CNG is much more stable compared to petrol, which has been prone to frequent and unpredictable price increases. 

With CNG costing between N230 and N270 per kilogram, it is far cheaper than the fluctuating price of petrol, making it a solid option for anyone looking to save money on fuel.

Environmental and economic benefits

In addition to being more affordable, CNG is also much cleaner than traditional petrol. The emissions from CNG vehicles are much lower, making them better for the environment and contributing to a reduction in air pollution.

This is an important consideration, especially with increasing awareness of climate change and the need for sustainable transportation solutions.

While the upfront costs of CNG vehicles may be high, they can help car owners save significantly on maintenance and fuel costs over time. 1. Safety Concerns: Some believe CNG cars are unsafe, but in reality, CNG is actually safer than petrol. CNG has a higher ignition temperature, meaning it is less likely to catch fire. Additionally, the cylinders that store CNG are much tougher than traditional petrol tanks and undergo strict safety tests to prevent leaks or accidents.
2. Reliability: There’s also a misconception that CNG-powered cars are unreliable or will have shorter lifespans. In fact, CNG is lighter and non-corrosive, which means the engine parts tend to wear out more slowly. This results in fewer repairs and lower long-term maintenance costs.
3. Limited Boot Space: Another concern with CNG vehicles is that they have less boot space due to the gas cylinders. While this is true, it’s a minor trade-off considering the long-term savings on fuel. Additionally, technology is improving, and the size of CNG cylinders is expected to shrink over time, which may help address this issue.
4. Availability of CNG Stations: Initially, the lack of CNG filling stations was a problem. However, the situation is improving rapidly. The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) has been expanding the number of CNG stations, and there are now over 5,000 CNG pumps across the country. As more people convert to CNG, the number of stations will continue to grow, making it easier to refuel.

As the Nigerian government works to make CNG more available and affordable, there’s hope that the cost of conversion will come down over time. For car owners, this means a more accessible way to switch to a cheaper, more environmentally friendly fuel source.
