Will Tinubu Drop Shettima in 2027 Election? APC Speaks Up
As Nigeria moves closer to the 2027 general election, speculation has been swirling about the future of Vice President Kashim Shettima running along with President Tinubu.
Some political observers have suggested that President Bola Tinubu may be considering a new running mate to strengthen his appeal in key regions. But the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) says otherwise.
APC Calls Speculation a “Distraction”
Addressing the growing rumours, APC’s National Vice Chairman (South-East), Dr Ijeoma Arodiogbu, was quick to dismiss the talk of Shettima being sidelined. According to him, the relationship between the President and Vice President remains rock-solid.
“I’m hearing that for the first time,” Arodiogbu said. “There’s a solid working relationship between President Tinubu and Vice President Shettima. Shettima is a key asset, intelligent, focused, and deeply involved in this administration.”
He described the rumours as mere political noise, likely stirred up to sow division ahead of the next election cycle.
The Backdrop: Tinubu’s Endorsement Fuels Speculation
These whispers gained traction after President Tinubu received an unopposed endorsement from top APC leaders and 22 governors for the 2027 race.
The endorsement, announced during the APC National Summit in Abuja, sparked concerns among critics who argue that bypassing a competitive primary stifles internal democracy.
Former APC presidential aspirant Charles Udeogaranya was among those who criticised the process. He warned that denying potential aspirants a fair contest could rob Nigerians of fresh leadership options.
North-Central voices add to the conversation
Adding another layer to the discussion is the growing demand for political inclusion from Nigeria’s North-Central region. Many from the zone feel left out of the current power structure and are now pushing for either the vice-presidential or presidential slot in 2027.
The North-Central Renaissance Movement has been vocal about this demand. Its leader, Professor Nghargbu K’tso, recently said, “We have what it takes to lead and not just to be led.” The movement has begun consultations across the country, seeking to reposition the region for greater political influence.
No official change, Says APC
Despite these swirling dynamics, APC officials insist there is no indication that Tinubu is considering a new running mate. Chidi Duru, the party’s Deputy National Organising Secretary, acknowledged that the final decision ultimately rests with President Tinubu but made it clear that there is currently no plan to alter the existing ticket.
Daniel Bwala, Special Adviser to the President on Policy Communication, echoed this position. When asked about the speculation, he replied simply, “I am not aware, Sir.”
What APC wants us to know
While the APC continues to project unity between Tinubu and Shettima, political calculations could still evolve as Nigeria’s diverse regional interests come into play. For now, though, the party maintains that the Tinubu-Shettima partnership remains intact heading into the 2027 contest.
One thing is certain, the coming months will keep the rumour mill churning as Nigeria’s political players position themselves for what promises to be another fiercely contested election.
