Workers Day 2025: FG Declares May 1st a Public Holiday

The Federal Government has officially declared Thursday, May 1, 2025, as a public holiday to celebrate this year’s Workers’ Day. The announcement was made in a statement released by Dr. Magdalene Ajani, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, in Abuja.

Speaking on behalf of the government, Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, praised Nigerian workers for their hard work, resilience, and contributions to the country’s development. He emphasized that the progress and international recognition Nigeria enjoys today would not be possible without the commitment and sacrifices of its workforce.

“There is dignity in labour,” the Minister stated. “Your dedication is crucial to nation-building. I encourage all workers to adopt a culture of innovation and productivity.”

He also highlighted the importance of peace as a foundation for industrial growth and economic progress, urging workers to continue improving their skills and professionalism to support better governance and national development.

Dr. Tunji-Ojo further assured the public that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration remains fully committed to protecting the lives and property of both citizens and foreigners residing in the country.

As Nigeria joins the rest of the world in marking Workers’ Day, the holiday offers an opportunity to reflect on the value of labour and the role workers play in shaping the nation’s future.
