₦12,500 Truck Fee Sparks Fuel Scarcity Warning in Lagos
A dispute between the National Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO) and the Lagos State Government may soon cause a fuel scarcity in Lagos.
NARTO is protesting a new fee of ₦12,500 for trucks using the Lekki–Epe corridor. Because of this, the group has told its members to stop moving tankers from Dangote Refinery.
In a memo sent on June 14, NARTO President Yusuf Lawal Othman said the government has ignored requests to lower the fee to ₦2,500, which they believe is more reasonable.
The E-call-up system was introduced to help reduce traffic congestion by controlling the number of trucks arriving in the area. While NARTO agrees with the system’s purpose, they think the fee is too high.
Othman told Vanguard that they support the system and want order, but the fees must be fair. He said they are still open to talks and do not want to stop operations; they just want to make sure truck owners are not struggling.
