24-Hour Curfew in Plateau State LG, Governor Moves Cool Tension

In a decisive response to the escalating security situation in Mangu Local Government Area, a 24-hour Curfew has been imposed in Plateau State by Governor, Caleb Mutfwang. This move aims to curb the recent surge in violence that has rocked the region.

Governor Mutfwang, acting on the advice of security agencies, declared the curfew as a necessary measure to stabilise the area. The announcement, confirmed by Gyang Bere, the Governor’s Director of Press and Public Affairs, restricts movement within the local government area, exempting only individuals performing essential services.

The Governor’s directive comes in the wake of persistent security challenges, highlighted by a series of violent attacks on communities within Mangu LGA. These incidents have resulted in significant loss of life and property, stirring concerns over the potential for further unrest.

Bere’s statement specified that only persons on essential duties will be permitted movement within the local government area until further notice, underscoring the administration’s commitment to peace and order. The Governor also appealed to residents to support security forces by providing crucial information that could lead to the restoration of peace.

The imposition of the 24-hour curfew in Plateau is not without precedent. Following a tragic incident on the 16th of May 2023, where suspected militia herders reportedly killed 29 individuals, mostly women and children, in Kubwat and Fungzai villages, the state government took similar steps to quell tensions. Subsequent attacks, including a deadly incursion on the 9th of July 2023 that claimed 13 lives, further necessitated the enforcement of curfews as a measure to prevent reprisals and escalation of violence.

Governor Mutfwang expressed his deepest sympathies to the families affected by these tragedies and reaffirmed his dedication to achieving lasting peace in Plateau State. He promised that the curfew would be lifted as soon as the security situation showed signs of improvement.

The 24-hour curfew in Mangu LGA as Plateau State grapples with these challenges, stands as a testament to the government’s resolve to protect its citizens and stem the tide of violence that threatens the fabric of the community.
