3 Countries That Can Stop Super Eagles From Winning AFCON 2025

The countdown to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations gets closer, though the team came close earlier this year, finishing as runners-up to Ivory Coast at AFCON 2023, Nigeria wants a fourth continental title in Morocco.

Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong believes the team has everything needed to go all the way. The squad is full of stars playing in top European leagues, and there is strong motivation after losing the last final.

Still, the experienced defender knows AFCON is never an easy tournament. He pointed out three strong opponents that could stand in Nigeria’s way.

Morocco – The host advantage

Morocco will be playing at home. That alone gives them a big push. Their fans are passionate and always fill the stadiums with noise and support. The Atlas Lions are also in great form. They impressed the world at the 2022 FIFA World Cup and are still considered one of Africa’s toughest sides. Troost-Ekong believes beating the hosts in front of their supporters will not be simple.

Côte d’Ivoire – The defending champions

Ivory Coast broke Nigerian hearts earlier this year when they defeated the Super Eagles in the AFCON 2023 final. They are coming to Morocco as champions, and that gives them confidence. They know how to win important matches. The Elephants have strong players, especially in attack and midfield, and they will surely try to defend their crown with pride.

Senegal – Quality squad

Senegal remain one of the most dangerous teams in Africa. They are physical, aggressive, and filled with experienced stars who have played together for years. The Teranga Lions won AFCON in 2022 and still have a winning mentality. Troost-Ekong knows that facing Senegal at any stage in the tournament will require Nigeria to be at their very best.

Is Nigeria ready for the challenge

Nigeria qualified strongly and will play in Group C with Tunisia, Tanzania, and Uganda. The first match will be on December 23 against Tanzania. Every game matters, because AFCON always brings surprises. Troost-Ekong refused to label Nigeria as favourites, but he is confident in the squad’s talent and determination.

This could also be his final major tournament for Nigeria on African soil, which gives the captain extra motivation to lift the trophy again after twelve years.
