Meet Nigeria’s Newly Appointed Service Chiefs

Nigeria has entered a new phase in its military leadership following President Bola Tinubu’s approval of fresh appointments across the armed forces.

The changes are part of ongoing efforts to strengthen national security and improve coordination among the services. Here is a look at the key figure now leading Nigeria’s defence structure.

Olufemi Oluyede: Chief of Defence Staff

Lieutenant General Olufemi Olatubosun Oluyede now serves as the Chief of Defence Staff, the highest military position in the country. His journey in the Nigerian Army started back in 1987 when he joined the 39th Regular Course at the Nigerian Defence Academy.

Five years later, he earned his commission as a Second Lieutenant, beginning a career that has now spanned close to forty years.

Oluyede hails from Ikere-Ekiti in Ekiti State and is known not just for his experience on the battlefield, but also for his academic strength. He studied Economics and has completed several leadership and strategic training programmes, including at the famous National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies in Kuru.

He has even taught at the Nigerian Defence Academy, which highlights his interest in grooming the next generation of officers.

Before rising to this top role, he served as the Chief of Army Staff.

His new responsibility demands a wider perspective. He will be expected to strengthen cooperation among the Army, Navy, and Air Force, improve how intelligence is shared, and guide the Armed Forces in tackling modern security threats such as insurgency, kidnapping, and organised crime.

Oluyede is known for his belief in a military that is well-prepared, motivated, and united. His leadership style points toward building a force that can adapt quickly to Nigeria’s shifting security demands.

Outside work, he enjoys travelling, basketball, and volleyball, a reminder that the man leading the nation’s troops also values balance and personal wellbeing.
