3 Places Named After Nobel Laureate Wole Soyinka

Wole Soyinka, a name associated with literary brilliance and cultural impact, stands as a towering figure not only in Nigeria but across the globe. Born on July 13, 1934, in Abeokuta, Nigeria, Soyinka has been a beacon of creativity and activism. His works, which span plays, novels, and poetry, have shone across themes of tyranny, tradition, and liberation, resonating with audiences worldwide.

In 1986, Wole Soyinka was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature, becoming the first African to be honored with this prestigious award. His commitment to human rights and political freedom has made him a vocal advocate for justice and equity, influencing countless generations.

Wole Soyinka Avenue, Gwarinpa Estate, Abuja

Wole Soyinka had been honored in Abuja with a street named after him in the prestigious Gwarinpa Estate.

This occurred in October 2008 when then Minister of FCT, Aliyu Modibbo, recognized Soyinka alongside 81 other distinguished Nigerians during Nigeria’s 48th independence anniversary.

Gwarinpa Estate, noted for being one of the largest of its kind in Africa, now boasts Wole Soyinka Avenue, a thoroughfare that embodies the prestige and cultural significance of its namesake. Despite some confusion in official records about its existence, the street stands as a proud reminder of Soyinka’s impact.

1 Arterial Road N20, Abuja

After the renaming of Arterial Road N20, to celebrate Soyinka’s enduring legacy, the Arterial Road N20 in Nigeria’s capital, Abuja, was renamed Wole Soyinka Way. This event was spearheaded by the Federal Capital Territory Administration under the guidance of Minister Nyesom Wike, with the inauguration presided over by President Bola Tinubu.

This arterial road, serving as a vital connector between the Outer Northern Expressway (ONEX) and the Outer Southern Expressway (OSEX), symbolizes the bridging of cultures and ideas, much like Soyinka’s works.

The renaming was described by President Tinubu as “a testament to the enduring legacy of Wole Soyinka and his contributions to Nigerian and global culture.”

The Wole Soyinka Centre for Culture and the Creative Arts, Lagos

Expanding his commemoration beyond the confines of Abuja, Wole Soyinka’s name graces the iconic National Arts Theatre in Lagos. Renamed the Wole Soyinka Centre for Culture and the Creative Arts, this landmark decision was announced by President Tinubu in tribute to Soyinka’s 90th birthday.

The center, a hub for artistic expression and cultural gatherings, mirrors Soyinka’s dedication to the arts and his role as a cultural ambassador.

This renaming not only celebrates his literary achievements but also his relentless advocacy for human values and justice, marking a significant milestone in honoring a true national treasure.
