3 Things Every Student Needs to Get on JAMB’s Matriculation List

If you’re a UTME candidate planning to gain admission into a Nigerian university, polytechnic, or college of education, getting your name on the JAMB National Matriculation List is not optional, it’s crucial.

Without it, you might not be recognized as a legitimate student, and worse, you could be blocked from NYSC after graduation.

Unfortunately, this has already happened to thousands of graduates, including Basola Jamiu Owodunni an orphan with a first-class degree whose name was initially missing from JAMB’s system, causing national outrage.

To prevent this kind of heartbreak, JAMB has now made it clear that there are three things every student must do to be listed. These steps were announced during JAMB’s 2025 Policy Meeting on Admissions, and they are now mandatory for all UTME candidates.

Here’s what you need to do:

Accept Your Admission on CAPS

The Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS) is JAMB’s official platform for managing university and other tertiary institution admissions in Nigeria. If you don’t accept your admission offer on CAPS, your admission doesn’t count no matter what other documents you may have.

Some students ignore this step, thinking that getting a letter from their school is enough. It’s not. If your admission is not accepted on CAPS within the time frame given, JAMB will treat it as if it never happened.

Print Your Original JAMB Result Slip

It’s not just about knowing your score, JAMB wants you to print the original version of your UTME result.

This document serves as part of your official academic record. It’s also one of the documents NYSC and other institutions will ask for when verifying your admission and graduation status.

If you’ve been using the notification slip (the basic printout), now is the time to upgrade. The original result slip has extra details and a barcode that makes it verifiable.

Print your JAMB admission letter

Even after accepting your admission on CAPS, you must still go ahead and print your official admission letter from the JAMB portal.

This letter confirms that your admission has been approved by JAMB and that you’re recognized as a bonafide student of your institution.

Failure to print this letter could be interpreted as not completing the admission process. And again, NYSC won’t mobilize you without it.

Why this matters more than ever

This isn’t just bureaucracy for its own sake. JAMB has faced serious criticism recently after more than 4,000 graduates were blocked from serving in the National Youth Service Corps because their admissions were not properly documented on CAPS.

Some students even claimed they followed all the steps, but JAMB’s records said otherwise.

The case of Basola Jamiu Owodunni, who graduated with a 4.41 CGPA from FUTA but was flagged by JAMB, highlights how devastating the consequences can be especially for students who have done everything right but didn’t double-check their CAPS status.

Thanks to public pressure, Owodunni’s case was eventually resolved, but not everyone has that kind of support. That’s why JAMB is tightening up the rules to make sure every candidate’s status is clear from Day One.
