Fire Destroys Part of Nigeria’s Civil Service Head Office in Abuja

A fire of unknown origin damaged part of the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation (OHCSF) in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital, on Monday morning. This caused panic among workers and commuters and led to a quick emergency response.

The fire was first spotted around 8:20 a.m. at Section C of the Federal Secretariat complex, where the civil service headquarters is located. Thick black smoke quickly filled the sky, forcing startled staff and early visitors to evacuate the building amid chaos.

Videos shared on social media showed dense smoke rising from the upper floors of the multi-storey complex, with alarmed workers quickly moving away. “I was at my desk when suddenly everyone started shouting fire! The smoke filled the corridor so fast. We all ran out,” said one civil servant who wished to remain anonymous.

Emergency Response and Containment

According to reports, personnel from the Federal Fire Service and other emergency agencies were quickly sent out after receiving distress calls. A spokesman for the Fire Service stated that firefighters from the Garki and Wuse stations arrived within minutes.

“We were contacted around 8:20 a.m. Right now, the fire is under control. The firefighters from the Garki and Wuse stations have managed to put the fire under control,” said Paul Abraham, Public Relations Officer of the Federal Fire Service.

Officials confirmed that the fire was contained to one wing of the building. Emergency teams were also actively working to stop it from spreading to nearby areas.

Security personnel helped with the situation by cordoning off the area and redirecting traffic around the Federal Secretariat complex. This caused significant traffic jams as drivers were rerouted from their usual paths.

Cause Still Undetermined

As of this report, authorities have not confirmed the cause of the fire. Investigators are expected to examine the scene once the situation is fully stabilized to find out what caused the blaze.

Officials stressed that detailed investigations would begin to fully understand the events leading up to the fire. However, early signs suggest an internal source, but there is no conclusive evidence yet.

Impact and Aftermath

While there have been no reported injuries at this point, the fire caused widespread fear within the Federal Secretariat. It forced workers from their offices and disrupted the early schedules of many civil servants.

The Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation plays a crucial role in coordinating federal civil service functions across Ministries, Departments, and Agencies. The damage to its headquarters is thus a matter of national concern.

In addition to the fear and disruption, initial reports indicate that equipment and documents in the affected area may have been damaged. However, officials are still assessing the full extent of the material loss.

Conclusion

Authorities have asked for calm, urging staff and visitors not to jump to conclusions while firefighters work to fully extinguish the remaining flames.

A formal statement is expected later in the day when federal emergency and investigative teams complete a full assessment of the situation.
