4 Nigerian Footballers with Big Transfer Fees Since 2020

In the world of football, big money deals often tell the story of a player’s rise. Nigerian players are no exception.

Over the past few years, several Nigerian stars have made huge moves to top clubs, showing not just their talent, but also their value.

Here are the Nigerian footballers who have landed some of the biggest transfer deals since 2020.

Victor Osimhen – €78.9 Million (Lille to Napoli, 2020)

Victor Osimhen’s move from French club Lille to Napoli in 2020 is still the most expensive transfer involving a Nigerian player. The total deal, which included bonuses and player swaps, reportedly hit €78.9 million.

He didn’t disappoint. Osimhen became one of the top strikers in Italy and played a huge part in helping Napoli win their first league title in more than 30 years. Now, he could be on the move again, this time to Galatasaray in a deal worth around €75 million.

Calvin Bassey – €23 Million (Rangers to Ajax, 2022)

Calvin Bassey made headlines in 2022 when Ajax paid €23 million to sign him from Rangers. Before that, he had impressed in the UEFA Europa League with solid performances for the Scottish side.

Though his time at Ajax had its ups and downs, Bassey’s talent was clear. He later moved to Fulham, continuing his journey in top-flight football.

Terem Moffi – €22.5 Million (Lorient to Nice, 2023)

In 2023, Terem Moffi joined OGC Nice from Lorient for €22.5 million. The move included a loan with a promise to buy, making him one of the priciest Nigerian forwards in French football.

Moffi has stayed consistent in front of goal and earned his place in Nigeria’s national team.

Taiwo Awoniyi – €20.5 Million (Union Berlin to Nottingham Forest, 2022)

Taiwo Awoniyi’s journey took him from being loaned out by Liverpool for years to becoming Nottingham Forest’s record signing in 2022.

After a strong season at Union Berlin, where he scored 20 goals, Forest paid €20.5 million to bring him in as they returned to the Premier League. His strength, speed, and work rate made him an instant fan favorite.
