Nigeria Allocates ₦24.6bn to Revive Abuja National Stadium

The 2026 federal budget has set aside ₦24.642 billion from the National Sports Commission’s (NSC) ₦203.6 billion allocation to renovate the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja.

This is a major step towards restoring one of the nation’s most iconic sports facilities.

Built in 2003 to host the 8th African Games, the vast stadium with 60,000 seats has suffered from years of neglect and poor upkeep. The pitch rapidly deteriorated despite a refurbishment between 2020 and 2022.

The renovation includes turf relaying and infrastructure improvements partly funded by a $1 million donation from billionaire Aliko Dangote.

Budget Breakdown and Scope of Works

According to Punch, the recently approved budget includes:

  • ₦18.775 billion goes to the renovation of the stadium’s main bowl.
  • ₦5.8 billion goes to the completion of a high-performance athletes’ center.
  • ₦65 million goes to upgrading the internet capacity and connectivity using optic fiber and LAN/WAN networks.
  • ₦15.5 billion to build a sports secretariat inside the stadium complex.

Authorities hope to finish the project in time for significant upcoming events, such as the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles and the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, starting in late 2025.

Public Reaction: Praise, Doubt, and Calls for Accountability

The public and sports community in Nigeria have differing opinions about the stadium’s extensive renovation.

Supporters, who see it as part of a larger effort to repair Nigeria’s crumbling sports infrastructure, have welcomed the extra funding.

However, skeptics have expressed mistrust and questioned why billions are once again being spent on the repairs.

A Broader Sports Revival Agenda

The stadium allocation aligns with a larger rise in the federal government’s sports budget.

The budget has grown by around 300% since the 2025 fiscal year and reflects a renewed focus on sports to boost national pride and competitiveness abroad.

As the stadium project advances, all eyes will be on whether it can represent a true turnaround for Nigerian sports facilities.
