Nigeria to Begin 90,000km Fibre-Optic Network Rollout in October

The Federal Government of Nigeria will commence the deployment of a 90,000-kilometre nationwide fibre-optic network in October, a move designed to significantly expand the country’s digital connectivity and broadband capacity.

The Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, confirmed the timeline, noting that the expansive rollout is a critical component of the administration’s strategy to strengthen the national digital infrastructure.

The project aims to address the current limitations in Nigeria’s digital landscape, where bandwidth constraints and high data costs have frequently hindered the growth of the digital economy. By establishing a robust fibre-optic backbone, the government intends to provide the foundational layer required for high-speed internet services across the federation.

According to the Ministry, the 90,000-kilometre project will focus on connecting underserved and unserved regions, thereby reducing the digital divide between major urban hubs and rural communities. This expansion is expected to provide the necessary infrastructure to support the increasing demand for data-driven services.

Enhancing Connectivity for the Digital Economy

The expansion of the fibre-optic network is expected to have direct implications for the telecommunications sector and the broader digital services ecosystem. Increased capacity at the backbone level typically allows Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and mobile network operators to improve service reliability and potentially reduce the costs associated with data transmission.

For Nigeria’s growing ecosystem of startups and fintech companies, the rollout promises more stable and high-speed internet, which is essential for the delivery of real-time financial transactions and e-commerce services. Reliable connectivity is a primary requirement for these businesses, as network downtime often results in immediate revenue losses and diminished consumer trust.

Furthermore, the project aligns with the strategic objectives of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to increase broadband penetration rates nationwide. The NCC has consistently advocated for increased investment in terrestrial and subsea fibre infrastructure to meet the targets established in the National Broadband Plan.

The rollout is also anticipated to be a prerequisite for the successful deployment of 5G technology. While mobile networks provide mobility, the backhaul for 5G towers requires massive fibre-optic capacity to handle the increased data loads that next-generation wireless technology demands.

Beyond direct connectivity, the deployment of the fibre network is expected to act as an economic multiplier. Enhanced internet access facilitates greater digital literacy and provides Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) with the tools to access national and global markets. This, in turn, can drive job creation within the digital services sector, ranging from software development to digital marketing and data analytics.

Industry observers note that the success of such a large-scale project will depend on efficient implementation and the ability to navigate the logistical and regulatory challenges of laying infrastructure across diverse terrains. The government is expected to work closely with state and local authorities to facilitate the installation process.

As the project enters its implementation phase in October, stakeholders in the telecommunications, technology, and finance sectors will be monitoring the rollout to assess its impact on network capacity and the overall cost of connectivity in Nigeria.
