Although she didn’t win, Tems made history as the first Nigerian artist to be nominated at the Oscars. She received a nomination for Best Original Song for her collaboration with Rihanna on “Lift Me Up” at the 95th Oscars.

Cynthia Erivo

Born to Nigerian parents, Cynthia has received two Academy Award nominations. Her first nomination was for Best Actress for her role in the film Harriet. She also received a nomination for Best Original Song for “Stand Up” from the same film, during the 92nd Academy Awards.

Sophie Okonedo

A British-Nigerian actor with Nigerian roots, Sophie received a Best Supporting Actress nomination at the 77th Academy Awards for her role in Hotel Rwanda.

Chiwetel Ejiofor

Chiwetel, a British-Nigerian actor and filmmaker of Igbo descent, gained international recognition for his role in the film 12 Years a Slave. He was nominated for Best Actor at the 86th Academy Awards in 2014.

Forest Whitaker

Forest, an American actor of Nigerian descent, won the Oscar for Best Actor for his portrayal of Ugandan dictator Idi Amin in the film The Last King of Scotland at the 79th Academy Awards.
