5 Times Oby Ezekwesili Has Challenged the Presidency

Oby Ezekwesili, a respected Nigerian figure and former government minister, has often opposed the Nigerian presidency, advocating for political accountability and societal reform.

Here are five notable instances where she has challenged presidential authority:

Debate Challenge to President Buhari

Ezekwesili boldly challenged President Muhammadu Buhari to a comprehensive 20-hour debate. Her aim was to scrutinise the government’s performance, highlighting issues and demanding clarity on policies and outcomes

Ezekwesili voiced strong criticism against the Nigerian government’s treatment of Omoyele Sowore, particularly criticizing the stringent bail conditions set by the court, which she felt were unjust and reflective of a larger issue of legal fairness under President Buhari’s administration

Educational Reform Proposals

Recognising the gaps in Nigeria’s educational system, Ezekwesili has been a vocal proponent of transforming higher education from traditional lecture-based models to a more practical, skills-focused approach. She argues that such reforms are crucial for increasing employability among graduates and addressing the broader employment crisis in Nigeria

Withdrawal from Presidential Race

In a strategic move, Oby Ezekwesili withdrew from the presidential race to help build a coalition aimed at providing a robust alternative to the dominant political parties. Her withdrawal was a protest against the personality-centric politics played by the major parties, which she believed overshadowed critical national issues.

Youth Unemployment and Policy Reforms

Ezekwesili has consistently highlighted the severe issue of youth unemployment in Nigeria. She proposes comprehensive policy reforms, education system improvements, and increased private sector involvement to harness the demographic dividend and mitigate the risks associated with a large unemployed youth population
