5 Times Footballs Players Have Collapse on the Pitch

Football fans worldwide were left in shock on December 1, 2024, as Fiorentina midfielder Edoardo Bove collapsed during a Serie A clash against Inter Milan. The incident occurred in the 16th minute of the match, held at the iconic Artemio Franchi Stadium in Florence. The atmosphere turned tense as Bove suddenly dropped to the ground, halting play.

His teammates, visibly shaken, immediately signaled for medical assistance. Surrounding the 22-year-old in an attempt to shield him from the crowd’s gaze, they anxiously watched as medics worked on him. 

Within moments, Bove was stretchered off and rushed to Careggi University Hospital, where he was admitted to intensive care.

Both Fiorentina and Inter players showed incredible solidarity, many openly crying as they left the pitch. The match, locked at 0-0, was abandoned out of respect for the young player and the severity of the situation.

This heartbreaking scene was a reminder of the physical and emotional risks that professional footballers face. Sadly, this wasn’t the first time a player had collapsed on the pitch. Piermario Morosini

On April 14, 2012, Piermario Morosini, a midfielder for Livorno, collapsed during a Serie B game against Pescara. The 25-year-old fell to the ground multiple times, attempting to stand before finally succumbing in the 31st minute. Medical staff rushed to his aid, but tragically, Morosini was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.

An autopsy later revealed cardiac arrest as the cause of death. This incident devastated the Italian football community, prompting the cancellation of all matches that weekend as a tribute to the young player’s memory.

Fabrice Muamba

A month prior to Morosini’s death, Fabrice Muamba stunned the football world when he collapsed during an FA Cup quarter-final between Bolton Wanderers and Tottenham Hotspur on March 17, 2012. Just minutes before halftime, the 23-year-old fell to the ground at White Hart Lane, sparking immediate panic.

Muamba’s heart stopped beating for an astonishing 78 minutes. Thanks to swift medical intervention, he was revived and eventually regained consciousness two days later. Though he survived, Muamba retired from professional football, acknowledging how close he had come to losing his life.

Cheick Tioté

In June 2017, former Newcastle United midfielder Cheick Tioté collapsed during a training session with his Chinese club, Beijing Enterprises. At just 30 years old, Tioté was in the prime of his life, yet he succumbed to a cardiac arrest before doctors could save him.

Tioté was widely celebrated for his fighting spirit on the pitch, most notably for his iconic equalizer during Newcastle’s stunning comeback against Arsenal in 2011. His untimely death left fans mourning a player whose determination and grit defined his career.

Abdelhak Nouri

On July 8, 2017, Ajax midfielder Abdelhak Nouri suffered a cardiac arrest during a preseason friendly against Werder Bremen. The then-20-year-old collapsed suddenly, and despite prompt medical attention, he suffered severe brain damage due to a lack of oxygen.

After spending nearly three years in a coma, Nouri awoke in March 2020. Though his condition has since stabilized, he remains heavily reliant on family and caregivers. 

Christian Eriksen

During Denmark’s Euro 2020 opener against Finland on June 12, 2021, Christian Eriksen collapsed in the 43rd minute, sending shockwaves through the football world. His teammates formed a protective circle around him as medics administered CPR on the pitch.

Miraculously, Eriksen was revived and later fitted with an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD). His recovery and eventual return to football have inspired countless fans and athletes alike, proving the resilience of the human spirit.
