7 Million Youth to Get Digital Skills? Inside FG’s New Training Plan
The Nigerian government is stepping up its efforts to equip young people with the skills needed to thrive in a digital economy.
In a move aimed at bridging the gap between education and employment, the Presidency has unveiled a plan to train 7 million Nigerian youths over the next two years, alongside existing initiatives targeting specialised technical skills.
Here’s what the new plan entails and how young Nigerians can benefit.
Global Connections: UAE and GITEX Nigeria
Part of this youth development strategy involves international collaboration. Nigeria has partnered with the UAE in connection with GITEX Nigeria 2025, scheduled for September 1–4.
The partnership will showcase startups, connect Nigerian youths to global opportunities, and create a talent pipeline ready for the international market.
This initiative also aligns with broader goals to boost entrepreneurship and innovation within the country.
Complementing 3MTT: A Multi-Tiered Approach
NiYA’s mass-market approach complements the more specialised 3 Million Tech Talents (3MTT) program, which targets 3 million youths in technical fields like software development, AI, data analytics, and cybersecurity by 2027.
Phase 1 of 3MTT trained 30,000 participants, while Phase 2 is set to onboard 270,000 more, with Microsoft joining as a strategic partner to strengthen delivery and scale.
Training Hubs and Eligibility
NiYA plans a national rollout using a digital platform in partnership with government agencies and industry players, ensuring accessibility across all regions.
The programs will cover digital skills, entrepreneurship, and leadership development. Meanwhile, 3MTT will continue with cohort-based, skill-specific placements delivered through approved providers and community hubs across 12 technical tracks.
Timelines and Expected Outcomes
In 2025, the focus is on the NiYA rollout and the GITEX Nigeria startup and investor convening. Between 2026 and 2027, the government will track cumulative enrolments, verify job placements and internships, and monitor employer partnerships absorbing graduates from both programs.
How Young Nigerians Can Get Involved
Interested youths should monitor the NiYA portal and the Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports Development channels for program announcements and registration calls. Similarly, 3MTT participants can track cohorts and skill-track openings via the program’s platform.
GITEX Nigeria offers a networking window for startups, investors, and recruiters to engage directly with emerging talent.
With these initiatives, the Federal Government is creating multiple pathways for young Nigerians to gain relevant skills, secure meaningful employment, and connect with opportunities both locally and globally.
