China Donates $1 Million to Help Nigeria Tackle Floods

China has pledged $1 million in humanitarian assistance to Nigeria as the country struggles to recover from the devastating floods that have displaced thousands and destroyed livelihoods in several states.

The donation was officially sealed on Wednesday in Abuja during a signing ceremony between the Chinese government and Nigeria’s Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning.

Speaking at the event, Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Yu Dunhai, said the gesture reflected Beijing’s solidarity with Nigeria at a difficult time. He expressed condolences to families who lost loved ones in the floods and noted that China, too, has faced natural disasters in recent months, making the situation particularly relatable.

“China stands with Nigeria in this moment of grief and recovery,” Dunhai said, while also reaffirming confidence in Nigeria’s resilience. He emphasized that the donation was not only about immediate relief but also about strengthening the broader partnership between both countries.

The ambassador highlighted other recent steps China has taken to deepen ties with Africa, including the introduction of zero-tariff access for a wide range of African exports, which is expected to boost Nigeria’s trade prospects and job creation.

On Nigeria’s side, Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Senator Atiku Bagudu, described the donation as timely support for communities worst hit by the floods. He noted that the intervention would complement the federal government’s ongoing recovery efforts.

Bagudu assured that the funds would be managed transparently, with a framework already agreed upon to ensure accountability.

A joint monitoring system involving Nigerian authorities and the Chinese Embassy will oversee the disbursement to guarantee that relief reaches those most in need.

Beyond immediate relief, the minister said the gesture was a testament to the evolving nature of Nigeria-China relations, which now stretches beyond trade and infrastructure into disaster response and humanitarian assistance.

“This support is not only an act of kindness but also a demonstration of the deep bond of friendship between Nigeria and China,” Bagudu said. “It reinforces the shared

commitment of both nations to sustainable development and mutual cooperation.”

The donation comes as Nigeria continues to battle the aftermath of widespread flooding, which has impacted agriculture, displaced thousands, and left many communities in urgent need of assistance.
