7 Most Costly Private Universities in Nigeria

As Nigeria deals with higher inflation, the cost of many things, including university education, is going up. Private universities, known for their excellent education and great facilities, are increasing their fees because it’s getting more expensive to run these schools.

Here’s a look at some of the most expensive private universities in Nigeria and what it costs to study there in the academic year 2024/2025.

Covenant University, Ota, Ogun State 

Covenant University is a top private Christian university that is known for focusing on good education. The fees for most courses range from N937,500 to N1,002,500 per session. This includes not just classes but also housing, meals, health insurance, and other services.

Babcock University, Ilishan-Remo, Ogun State

Babcock University is connected to the Seventh-Day Adventist Church and has high educational standards. It charges N4,600,000 a year for Medicine & Surgery. Law students pay N2,214,677.50 each year. Fees for other programs like Accounting start at N1,286,283.70 for the first year and get a bit cheaper after that.

American University of Nigeria (AUN), Yola, Adamawa State

AUN offers an education similar to American universities and is one of the most expensive in Nigeria. It costs N1,221,000 per semester for a typical 15-credit course load, which adds up to N2,442,000 a year. Specialised courses like Law and Engineering cost more, about N1,755,600 per semester.

Bowen University, Iwo, Osun State

Bowen University offers many different courses. Medicine & Surgery costs N4,600,000 a year, and Law costs N2,214,677.50 per session.

Lead City University, Ibadan, Oyo State

Lead City University has modern facilities and offers expensive programs in Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, and Nursing. Medicine costs N5,525,000 a year. Pharmacy and Nursing costs N3,025,000 each year.

Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti

This university is especially costly for medical and health-related courses. The first year of Medicine and Surgery costs N4,670,000, and the following years cost N5,555,000 each. Dentistry costs between N3,318,000 and N4,170,000 a year.

Nile University, Abuja

Nile University has a wide range of programs, including Medicine, Engineering, and Law. It’s known for its quality and charges high fees. Medicine & Surgery costs N5,950,000 per session (N2,975,000 per semester). Law and Engineering fees range from N2,900,000 to N3,000,000 a year.

The increasing fees at these private universities show the economic challenges in Nigeria, such as rising inflation and higher costs for energy and other needs. While these universities offer good education and facilities, the higher fees are a big challenge for many families and could make it hard for some students to afford these schools.
