9 Fully Operating Refineries in Nigeria

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) recently announced that the Port Harcourt Refinery has restarted operations, marking a step toward enhancing Nigeria’s energy independence and economic growth. 

This event was highlighted by Mr. Olufemi Soneye, the Chief Corporate Communications Officer at NNPCL, as a monumental achievement.

Here’s a list of the 9 refineries currently operational in Nigeria:

Edo Refinery and Petrochemical Company

Located in Edo State, this refinery is a subsidiary of AIPCC Energy and operates in two phases with capacities of 1,000 BPSD and 5,000 BPSD. It is fully operational.

Duport Midstream

This refinery, also situated in Edo State, has a capacity of 2,500 BPD. It was completed in 2022 and commenced production in 2023.

Walter Smith Refinery

Located in Imo State, the Walter Smith refinery has a current capacity of 5,000 bpd and started its operations in 2020. Plans are underway to expand its capacity to 50,000 bpd.

OPAC Refinery

Situated in Kwale, Delta State, this 10,000-bpd modular refinery was completed in 2021, reflecting the federal government’s efforts to enhance local crude oil refining capabilities.

Niger Delta Petroleum Refinery (Aradel)

Originally commissioned in 2010, this refinery in the Niger Delta started with a 1,000 bbls/day capacity and has expanded to an 11,000 bbls/day modular refinery producing various petroleum products.

Old Port-Harcourt Refinery

Commissioned in 1965, this refinery initially had a capacity of 60,000 barrels per day. It underwent repairs by Italian firm Tecnimont SPA starting in 2021, with significant milestones reached by the end of the following year.

Warri Refinery and Petrochemical Company (WRPC)

Established in 1978 with a capacity of 125,000 bpd at a cost of $478 million, WRPC has faced challenges in reaching full capacity, with various phases of operation and repairs over the decades.

New Port-Harcourt Refinery

Commissioned in 1985 at a cost of $850 million, this refinery adds 150,000 barrels per day to Nigeria’s refining capacity, bringing the total for Port Harcourt to 210,000 barrels per day.

Dangote Refinery

Located in Lekki, Lagos State, this massive 650,000-bpd facility was commissioned in May 2023. Built at a cost of around $19 billion, it began refining oil in December 2023 and started distributing products both locally and internationally by May 2024.
