Ondo Governor Deploys Specialized Machinery to Locate Submerged NAF Aircraft

The Governor of Ondo State, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has confirmed the deployment of two specialised swamp boogies to the site of a Nigerian Air Force (NAF) aircraft crash to assist in search and recovery operations.

The decision follows significant challenges faced by search teams attempting to navigate the difficult terrain surrounding the crash location. The Governor noted that the main body of the aircraft had not been sighted as of his recent visit, with strong indications that the wreckage is submerged in a swamp.

During his visit to the area, Aiyedatiwa explained that the deployment of the heavy-duty, tracked machinery is essential for traversing the marshy ground that has hindered standard rescue vehicles.

Search efforts hampered by difficult terrain

The recovery operations have encountered substantial obstacles due to the environmental conditions at the crash site. According to the Governor, the inability to locate the aircraft’s primary structure suggests the impact likely occurred within a wetland area, making visibility and access extremely limited.

The use of swamp boogies—specialised vehicles designed to operate in soft, waterlogged, or unstable soil—is intended to provide the necessary access for investigators and recovery teams to reach the suspected location of the debris.

The Governor’s update follows the deployment of specialised equipment to the Nigerian Air Force crash site, an effort prompted by the need to secure the area and begin a thorough investigation.

Locating the aircraft’s main body is a critical requirement for the ongoing investigation. Finding the wreckage is necessary to retrieve flight data recorders, which are essential for determining the technical or human factors that led to the incident.

While the search continues, the presence of the swampy terrain poses a challenge to the speed of the operation. The Nigerian Air Force has yet to provide further technical details regarding the specific aircraft model or the progress of the recovery mission, though state authorities are working in coordination with the military.

The search remains active as technical teams monitor the site and attempt to pinpoint the exact coordinates of the submerged wreckage.
