Akon City: Residents to Use Only Cryptocurrency

Record label owner and entrepreneur, Akon, has finalised an agreement with the Government of Senegal to create his own city – Akon City.

The Akon City would be the first in the world to trade solely on cryptocurrency ‘Akoin’ though Africa population still predominantly make payments in cash.

Being built on a 2,000-acre land, the city was gifted to Akon by the Senegalese president, and upon completion, will be powered by renewable energy (Akon Solar project) with its own international airport nearby Senegal’s capital, Dakar.

The first phase of the Akon City which will be completed in 10 years, has been underway since March 2019 and will commence construction of its phase 2 in 2025.

The city which has been likened to Wakanda, the fictional-superhero movie created by Marvel, will is not state-sponsored

After signing papers with officials in the West African country this week, Akon, 46, proudly announced the news to his social media followers with a photo of him holding a copy of the agreement and standing next to two officials during a meeting in Dakar saying ‘Just finalised the agreement for AKON CITY in Senegal. Looking forward to hosting you there in the future,’ the rapper stated to his Instagram followers.

While on the Power 106 Los Angeles show, Akon explained to Nick Cannon saying; ‘It’s Akon City.

‘It’s all renewable, the Akon-tainment solar city. It’s all renewable. A real physical place, it’s going to have a real airport. It’s a 10-year building block so we’re doing it in stages.

‘We started construction in March and stage two is going to be 2025,’ he added.

Aliaune Akon Thiam rose to prominence in 2004 with his debut top 10 single Locked Up single and went on to land a UK number one with ballad Lonely which is credited with discovering Lady Gaga while also signing YouTuber Jeffree Star to his Konvict Muzik record label.
