Anambra High Court Sentences Man to Death for Murder and Theft

A High Court sitting in the Idemili Judicial Division of Anambra State has sentenced a man, Ikechukwu Okoye, to death by hanging for the murder of his family friend’s wife and the theft of her property.

Justice A.O. Okuma handed down the sentence after finding the defendant guilty on multiple counts of murder and stealing. During the trial, the court examined evidence presented by the prosecution regarding the fatal attack and the subsequent unlawful removal of the victim’s belongings.

Delivering the judgment, Justice Okuma dismissed the claims of self-defence put forward by Okoye, ruling that the defence lacked merit and was contradicted by the weight of evidence established during the proceedings. Details of the ruling were highlighted in proceedings covered by Tribune Online.

Capital punishment remains a legal sentence in Nigeria for specific offenses, including murder and armed robbery, though executions are relatively infrequent due to administrative delays and prolonged appeals processes within the judicial system.

Legal practitioners note that defendants convicted in state high courts retain the constitutional right to appeal their convictions up to the Court of Appeal and ultimately the Supreme Court, meaning the legal battle surrounding the case may continue through higher judicial tiers.
