Ansaru terror group claims killing of Katsina cleric Sheikh Masusuka

The Ansaru terror group has claimed responsibility for the killing of a prominent cleric, Sheikh Masusuka, in Katsina State.

In a four-minute video exclusively obtained by Premium Times, the militant group stated that its fighters carried out the attack at approximately 8:30 p.m.

The group cited Masusuka’s advocacy for interfaith peaceful coexistence as one of the primary reasons for his execution. The claim follows growing concerns regarding the targeted killings of religious leaders in Northern Nigeria.

Security implications of targeted killings

According to the footage, the fighters specifically identified the cleric’s efforts to foster harmony between different religious groups as a provocation against their extremist ideology. Ansaru, an Al-Qaeda-linked splinter group, has a history of targeting individuals they deem to be apostates or those who promote moderate religious views that conflict with their interpretations.

The murder of Sheikh Masusuka occurs against a backdrop of heightened insecurity in Katsina State. The state has frequently dealt with a dual threat of banditry and insurgent activities, with armed groups operating in the vast forest reserves and rural communities. The targeting of religious figures is often seen as an attempt by these groups to destabilise social cohesion and eliminate voices that promote stability and tolerance.

Ansaru has previously been identified by security analysts as a group that operates with a high level of tactical precision, often focusing on ideological targets rather than just economic crimes like kidnapping for ransom. By targeting a cleric known for interfaith dialogue, the group appears to be sending a message to other religious leaders in the region.

The death of the cleric has caused significant distress among local communities in Katsina. Local leaders have expressed concerns that such attacks could undermine the fragile peace between different religious denominations in the state. While the military and police have conducted various operations to flush out bandits and terrorists in the northwest, the ability of these groups to conduct targeted assassinations suggests a persistent intelligence gap.

Security agencies have yet to release an official statement regarding the specific video or the movement of Ansaru fighters in the immediate aftermath of the claim. The incident places additional pressure on the Katsina State government to enhance protection for religious institutions and community leaders at risk of extremist violence.

The killing of Sheikh Masusuka raises urgent questions about the safety of moderate religious voices in areas under the influence of non-state armed groups.
