Are Women Choosing Love Over Money?
Love they say is more than an infatuation, it is a deep and true feeling towards another person, While many think women prefer money over love, in truth, many women want love and attention from men.
In Lagos, it’s concerning that more married women are dating younger men to fill the emotional gaps their husbands don’t fill.
Meanwhile, some single women date married men for money but give it to their real boyfriends or lovers.
Business Elite spoke to some women to see if they would choose love over money
Adaobi (not her real name) is a 29-year-old software developer who works in Lagos. She said despite the pressure to marry a rich man, she chose Chinedu, a teacher with a modest income, and their relationship is built on love, mutual respect, and shared dreams.
Adaobi says, “For me, finding someone who brings happiness and peace is more important than money. Chinedu is my peace.”
This choice is becoming more common as Nigerian women gain more education and work opportunities, making their own money and depending less on a partner for financial security.
They are looking for true companionship rather than just a financial arrangement.
When Business Elite also spoke with Dr. Ifeoma Sunmonu, a psychologist in Abuja, she said many women she talks to are looking for emotional support in their relationships, not just financial stability.
“Most women want a partner who understands and supports them emotionally, not just someone who can pay the bills,” she says.
Even during tough times, like recent economic downturns, many Nigerian couples have shown that sticking together through hard times can make their relationships stronger.
By sharing stories like Adaobi and Chinedu’s, it becomes clear that the stereotype of Nigerian women preferring wealthy partners is not accurate.
Many are choosing relationships based on love and emotional connection, showing that these are what truly matter to them.
