Ghana Appoints Carlos Queiroz to Lead 2026 World Cup Campaign
Ghana has turned to experienced Portuguese coach Carlos Queiroz as it prepares for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Ghana Football Association confirmed the appointment after approval from its Executive Council and consultations with key stakeholders. Queiroz is expected to begin work immediately as the Black Stars start final preparations for the tournament in Canada, Mexico, and the United States.
The decision signals Ghana’s desire for experience, discipline, and tactical stability ahead of one of football’s biggest stages.
Why Ghana Chose Queiroz
Queiroz is no stranger to the World Cup. He has managed teams across four editions of the tournament and built a reputation as a coach who can organize teams well and compete against stronger opponents.
His World Cup record includes:
- South Africa qualification for 2002
- Portugal reaching the knockout stage in 2010
- Iran appearances in 2014 and 2018
He has overseen 13 World Cup matches in total, giving Ghana a manager with deep tournament knowledge.
That experience likely played a major role in the GFA’s decision.
The effect on the Black Stars
The appointment comes shortly after Ghana ended Otto Addo’s tenure following disappointing results.
Recent defeats in friendly matches and failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations increased pressure on the federation to act.
Despite having talented players such as Mohammed Kudus and Antoine Semenyo, Ghana struggled for consistency and confidence. Now the federation hopes Queiroz can quickly restore structure and belief.
Tough Group Awaits Ghana
Ghana’s World Cup journey will not be easy.
The Black Stars are set to begin their campaign against Panama in Toronto on June 17, 2026.
They will then face England and Croatia in a group that promises to test them physically, tactically, and mentally.
It is the type of challenge where tournament experience on the bench could make a difference.
