Arsenal Seals a €73.5m Deal for Viktor Gyökeres
Arsenal have secured a major summer signing by agreeing a €73.5 million deal for Sporting CP’s in‑form striker, Viktor Gyökeres. The 27‑year‑old Swede has put pen to paper on a five‑year contract, becoming Mikel Arteta’s first and most costly acquisition of the window.
The transfer fee breaks down into an initial €63.5 million paid up front and up to €10 million in performance‑related add‑ons. According to David Ornstein, Sporting insisted on ambitious add‑on triggers, while Arsenal resisted overly generous clauses, before both clubs struck a balance. Fabrizio Romano adds that Gyökeres’ agent waived his usual commission to help finalise the move swiftly.
Arsenal view Gyökeres as the ideal complement to their high‑pressing system. Last season at Sporting Lisbon, he scored 36 goals in all competitions, displaying the movement, physicality and clinical finishing that Arteta has prioritised in his centre‑forward role.
His arrival follows the Gunners’ earlier captures of Martin Zubimendi and Noni Madueke, underlining a strategic revamp across the spine of the team.
Gyökeres is expected to link up with his new teammates on Arsenal’s pre‑season tour, which kicks off later this month in Asia. Arteta praised his work rate and pressing instincts in his first public comments on the deal, highlighting how the striker’s off‑ball effort and link‑up play will help Arsenal transition quickly from defence to attack.
