Atiku promises to tackle insecurity at Sokoto campaign launch

Atiku Abubakar has pledged to prioritise the resolution of national insecurity as he commenced his 2027 electioneering activities in Sokoto State. Speaking during the launch of his campaign, the politician stated that addressing the safety of Nigerian citizens would be a central pillar of his administration’s agenda.

The campaign flag-off, conducted under the banner of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), marks an early move into the race for the presidency. Atiku asserted that the party’s momentum is growing and maintained that no political obstacle would prevent the ADC from achieving its objectives in the upcoming elections.

The choice of Sokoto as the venue for the event was a strategic decision. Atiku explained that the state was selected because of its historical significance and its reputation as a centre of peace, making it a suitable location to discuss national stability and security.

Security challenges and their regional impact

The promise to combat insecurity comes as various parts of the Northwest, including Sokoto, continue to face persistent threats from banditry and kidnapping. These security breaches have disrupted local economies, particularly in the agricultural sector.

Farmers in the region have frequently reported being unable to access their lands due to the risk of attacks, leading to decreased food production and rising food prices across the country. By addressing these concerns, Atiku is targeting a critical issue that affects the livelihoods of millions of Nigerians in the northern belt.

The decision to launch the campaign with the campaign flag-off in Sokoto also reflects a broader political strategy. As the 2027 elections approach, political movements are increasingly focusing on the security vacuum in the North to gain electoral leverage.

While Atiku has outlined a commitment to security, specific details regarding his proposed tactical approach or funding for such measures were not provided during the event. Political analysts are also monitoring how the ADC will navigate the existing political dominance of other major parties in the lead-up to the polls.

The campaign is expected to move to other states within the next few months as the party seeks to consolidate its presence across the six geopolitical zones.
