Professor Ayodeji Badejo has formally assumed office as the Vice-Chancellor of Lagos State University (LASU), marking the beginning of a new leadership era for the institution. During the official handover ceremony, the new Vice-Chancellor unveiled a comprehensive eight-point agenda designed to reposition the university as a leading global centre for excellence and innovation.
The transition comes at a critical time for the Lagos State University, which remains a cornerstone of the state’s human capital development strategy. Badejo’s appointment follows a rigorous selection process aimed at sustaining the institution’s recent gains in academic rankings and institutional stability.
In his maiden address to the university community, Professor Badejo emphasised that his administration would focus on consolidating existing achievements while introducing reforms to address modern educational challenges. The eight-point agenda covers academic excellence, research impact, financial sustainability, digitalisation, staff welfare, infrastructure development, campus security, and community engagement.
Badejo stated that his primary goal is to ensure that LASU becomes a self-sustaining institution capable of competing with top-tier universities globally. This involves a significant shift in the university’s operational model, moving towards increased revenue generation and reduced dependence on state government subventions.
A central pillar of the new administration’s strategy is the promotion of cutting-edge research that addresses local and global economic needs. Professor Badejo noted that the university would incentivise faculty members to pursue international grants and collaborate with industry players to commercialise academic findings.
The Vice-Chancellor also highlighted the importance of academic integrity and the student experience. He pledged to streamline administrative processes, ensuring that student results and certificates are processed with greater efficiency through the deployment of advanced digital infrastructure.
Strengthening Financial Autonomy and Private Sector Partnerships
A major component of Professor Badejo’s roadmap is the drive for financial autonomy, a move that aligns with the Lagos State Government broader objective of making state institutions more resilient. The administration plans to expand the university’s endowment fund and explore public-private partnerships (PPPs) for major infrastructure projects.
This economic focus is intended to insulate the university from the fluctuations of public finance while allowing for competitive compensation packages for staff. By diversifying revenue streams through consultancy services, agricultural ventures, and professional development programmes, the university aims to build a robust financial buffer.
Infrastructure development remains a priority, with the new Vice-Chancellor promising to complete ongoing projects while initiating new ones through strategic collaborations. This includes the expansion of residential facilities for students and the modernization of lecture halls and laboratories to meet international standards.
Professor Badejo noted that the university would continue to engage with the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) and other development partners to secure funding for critical physical assets. The goal is to create an environment that is conducive to both intensive learning and high-level research.
Digital transformation features prominently in the 8-point agenda. The administration intends to implement an integrated management information system to handle everything from admissions to alumni relations. This shift is expected to reduce bureaucratic bottlenecks and improve the transparency of the institution’s internal operations.
Regarding staff welfare, the Vice-Chancellor assured employees that their professional growth and well-being would be prioritised. He acknowledged that the success of his agenda depends on the dedication of the workforce and promised to maintain a harmonious relationship with the various staff unions on campus.
The appointment of Professor Badejo is seen as a strategic move by the Visitor to the University, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, to ensure continuity in the institution’s upward trajectory. The Governor has previously emphasised the role of LASU in achieving the state’s “T.H.E.M.E.S. Plus” agenda, particularly in the areas of education and technology.
The new Vice-Chancellor is expected to meet with the University Senate and various faculty heads in the coming weeks to begin the detailed implementation of the strategic plan. These sessions will outline specific targets and timelines for each of the eight pillars of the new administration.
