Suspected bandits have decapitated one of the many individuals abducted during a violent overnight raid on Shadadi and neighbouring communities in Niger State.
The attack, which took place in the Mariga Local Government Area, resulted in the kidnapping of more than 100 residents. The incident has caused widespread panic as the attackers used extreme violence to communicate their demands to the local population.
In a move to enforce a N50 million levy demanded from the community, the gunmen reportedly sent the severed head of an abductee to a community leader. This brutal act followed an overnight attack in Mariga Local Government Area that left dozens of families in fear.
Security crisis in Niger State communities
The Mariga Local Government Area has become a frequent target for banditry, with rural farming communities often being raided by armed groups. The latest incident in Shadadi shows a shift in tactics, where bandits move beyond simple kidnapping for ransom to demanding large-scale “levies” or taxes from entire communities to prevent further attacks or the execution of captives.
Witnesses and local sources indicate that the bandits arrived in large numbers, overwhelming the local security presence during the night. The scale of the abduction, involving over 100 people, suggests a coordinated effort by the criminal gang to destabilise the region and extract maximum financial gain through intimidation.
The demand for N50 million is a significant escalation in the financial pressure placed on rural agrarian communities. For many residents of Shadadi and its neighbours, such a sum is beyond their immediate reach, creating a desperate situation where the choice is between economic ruin or the continued loss of lives.
Niger State has struggled to contain the spread of banditry across its various local government areas. Despite various security operations launched by federal and state authorities, armed groups continue to operate in the forested areas bordering the state, frequently launching raids on unsuspecting settlements.
Local leaders have expressed concern over the psychological warfare being employed by the bandits. Sending body parts to community authorities is a tactic intended to undermine local leadership and spread terror, making it difficult for residents to organise any form of community-led defence.
The state government and security agencies have yet to release an official statement regarding the specific number of casualties or the current location of the abducted individuals. Residents in Mariga continue to wait for a decisive security intervention to prevent further incursions into their villages.
