Bendel Insurance has filed a formal petition with the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) management to challenge a controversial goal scored by Rangers International.
The Benin-based club, known as the Benin Arsenals, is seeking a review of the decision that allowed a 47th-minute goal to stand during their recent encounter with the Enugu-based side.
The club’s grievance is based on the assertion that match officials failed to enforce the Laws of the Game after a goalpost was allegedly displaced during the attacking move that led to the goal.
Allegations of officiating failure
The Benin Arsenals contend that the displacement of the goalpost should have prompted the referee to halt play immediately. Under the standard FIFA Laws of the Game, if a goalpost becomes displaced, play must be stopped, and the goalpost must be replaced before play can resume.
The club maintains that by allowing the match to continue and the goal to stand, the officials committed a technical error that directly impacted the outcome of the match. This petition regarding the controversial Rangers goal reflects growing concerns over officiating consistency within the domestic league.
The displacement of goalposts is a specific technicality addressed in the laws governing the field of play. If the referee fails to stop play when equipment is compromised, it can lead to disputes regarding the legality of subsequent actions, including goals scored.
While the specific details of the displacement are being reviewed, the club argues that the integrity of the competition relies on the strict application of technical rules, including the physical state of the pitch equipment.
The NPFL has frequently faced scrutiny over officiating decisions, with clubs often calling for more stringent training for referees to mitigate such technical errors. As the league progresses, disputes of this nature often set precedents for how technical irregularities are handled in future matches.
The NPFL management has yet to release an official statement regarding the timeline for the review of the petition. The league’s technical committee is expected to examine video footage of the 47th-minute incident to determine if the goalpost was indeed moved and whether the officials followed the correct protocol. A decision from the league could result in an adjustment to the match results or disciplinary measures for the officiating crew.
