Pick n Pay has reported a 2.7% increase in group turnover, with the growth driven primarily by the performance of its Boxer brand.
The result comes as CEO Sean Summers continues to implement a turnaround strategy for the retail group. While the overall group saw growth, the figures reveal a stark contrast between different arms of the business.
Core supermarkets remain flat
Despite the group-wide increase, Pick n Pay’s core supermarkets have remained flat. The lack of growth in these primary stores indicates that the turnaround efforts have yet to trigger a recovery in the company’s main supermarket operations.
The company’s reliance on Boxer suggests that the discount segment is currently the primary engine for revenue growth, offsetting the stagnation seen in the core retail brand.
Adding to the operational challenges, the group is still dealing with an unresolved labor dispute, which continues to hang over the company’s internal stability during this transition period.
