Chad Poised to Be First Among Africa’s Junta-Led Nations to Transition to Democracy

Chad is poised to be the first among Africa’s nations currently governed by military juntas to embrace democracy, with the presidential elections held on Monday.

This pivotal election marks the culmination of a three-year transitional phase that commenced following the sudden demise of the long-standing leader, Idriss Déby Itno. Amidst this historic shift, concerns linger that violence could erupt should the election process be perceived as unfair.

The late leader’s son, General Mahamat Déby, is a leading contender, sparking doubts about the prospects for true reform under his leadership. Casting his vote in the capital, N’Djamena, President Déby expressed his satisfaction at adhering to the agreed timeline for elections that herald a return to constitutional governance. He added that it falls to the people of Chad to turn out in large numbers and elect their president.

However, the electoral atmosphere is tense. In February, the assassination of Yaya Dillo, a notable opposition figure, and the subsequent disqualification of two other opposition candidates have heightened fears of the election’s legitimacy.

Approximately 8.5 million citizens are registered to vote, with preliminary results expected by May 21 and final outcomes to be announced on June 5. Should no candidate receive an outright majority, a second-round vote is scheduled for June 22.

The campaign has primarily focused on pressing issues such as the escalating cost of living and inadequate access to basic amenities like water and electricity. Déby has pledged to allocate more resources to support vulnerable populations, particularly women and children, and to prioritise industrial development, private sector growth, and enhanced security measures.

This election is a significant milestone for Chad and could set a precedent for other nations in the West and Central African region, often referred to as the “coup belt,” striving to move towards democracy.
